I believe the true and only way you can really immerse yourself in a culture and country is through food. Food is an adventure that we get to experience every single day, but especially when you’re travelling abroad. But, exploring food can become a problem when the country’s traditional dishes are not the healthiest.
Don’t
get me wrong, when I was doing my internship abroad in Valencia, Spain I fell
in love with the food. From paellas valencianas, to jamon serrano and some
delicious orxata, I could literally eat it all. And let’s not even mention how
many ice cream shops there are around the study center! The limit did not exist
when it came to eating food in Valencia. But, when you’re spending 6 to 12
weeks or even a year studying abroad, there comes a point where you realize you
can’t eat so unhealthy every single day.
So I started doing my research and I
came across this little restaurant by the local market called ‘Almalibre Açaí
Bar’ and I knew I had to try it! Açaí is a Brazilian super fruit berry that has
become pretty popular in recent years. Açaí is used in “Açaí Bowls” and there
are pictures of them all over the internet so I was pretty excited that I was
finally going to be able to try one of them.
I grabbed one of my friends and we decided to
go for dinner to try the restaurant out. The walk from the study center to the
local restaurant took less than 10 minutes and when we got there I was so
amazed at how cute the place was. Almalibre looked like something you would see
on Pinterest. The place is bohemian but at the same time rustic-looking. Of
course since they are an Açaí Bar, açaí bowls are their specialty; but they
also offer so many healthy and organic options! They have everything from vegan
burgers, vegetarian meal options, and even organic drinks! It’s truly a place
where you can indulge with no regrets!
If you’re vegan or vegetarian, or if you just want
to eat healthy and clean while you’re in Valencia, I recommend for you check
this place out! You will not be disappointed. Plus, if you go ten times to the
restaurant, your eleventh meal is free so there’s really no going wrong!
